We write what makes your day.
This exciting movie is filled with moments of nostalgia and Easter eggs from the game it’s based on. With such great animation by a collaboration with Illumination and Nintendo. So don’t wait to read this amazing overview to know everything about it, and a special movie review at the end.
⚠SPOILERS AHEAD⚠
The movie is the Super Mario Bros movie, it is not to be confused with its counterpart that was a flop. The movie starts in Brooklyn with brothers Mario and Luigi having quit their jobs to start their own business. And with the disappointment of their fathers, they plan to fix a water main leak from the news.
But the brothers stumble underground and are sucked from a mysterious Warp pipe that separates them. Mario, like the lucky one, lands in the Mushroom Kingdom. And Luigi lands in the Dark Lands that are ruled by the Koopa King Bowser. This is basically when the movie starts to pick up in both action and plot.
Now we go to the main reason why Bowser is doing what he does, to marry princess Peach, and he will destroy the Mushroom Kingdom with a Super Star if she rejects her. Luigi is later taken by Bowser to threaten Mario if he would ever be a competitor for Peach’s love. Mario meets Toad and takes him to Peach; it is revealed that she wants to ally with the Kongs to help against Bowser, Peach then agrees to take Toad and Mario with her. It is also revealed that Peach ended up in the Mushroom Kingdom as a baby, where the Toads took her and made her their leader. The twist that Peach isn’t from the Mushroom Kingdom is pretty surprising because most people assume that she was born there.
Peach, Mario, and Toad convince Cranky Kong- The Kongs’ leader- army to help them if Mario can defeat his son- Donkey Kong. Mario succeeds and Cranky Kong gives them and them and his army karts to drive to the Mushroom Kingdom on a Rainbow Road. Now we think this is a good time to talk about the voice actor of Donkey Kong, Seth Rogen. Seth Rogen is an amazing voice actor, and this is proven by the lines he says as Donkey Kong. Seth Rogen gives Donkey Kong sort of a funny tone. I hope he doesn’t quit.
Now we go back to the movie, when the group gets ambushed. Cranky Kong and his army is captured, Donkey Kong and Mario are in an eel underwater. Princess Peach and Toad evacuate the Mushroom Kingdom and reluctantly agree to marry Bowser after Toad is hurt. Mario and Donkey Kong escape the eel after riding a rocket in the eel and head to the wedding. The part where Mario and Donkey Kong discuss their problems in the eel is nice because we find out that their fathers are both disappointed in them and insult each other for it.
At the wedding, Bowser is going to execute his captives like Luigi and Cranky Kong in Peach’s honor. Toad smuggles a power up for Peach and freezes Bowser and helps free the prisoners with Donkey Kong and Mario. Bowser then frees himself and sends a huge Bomber Bill to destroy the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario redirects it to the Warp Pipe where it explodes, creating a suction where it brings everyone to Brooklyn. As Mario and Luigi fight Bowser, they use the Super Star to become invincible. They defeat Bowser and put him in a jar using a Mini Mushroom, the brothers are then praised by Brooklyn’s people. And in the end, the brothers move to the Mushroom Kingdom and begin working together there.
So, after fully overviewing the movie, we get to the part most of you are here for: the rating. The movie in itself was very good and almost everything about it was good from the casting to the animation. But of course every movie has some downsides. It was slightly off from the original base work that being the game, and how instead of Princess Peach being kidnapped, it's Luigi. But it was also nice to see Princess Peach in action sequences instead of being kidnapped and not being able to do anything.
And so taking into account the negatives this movie might bring to some of you and not only us, we feel like it is fitting to rate this movie a 4.5/5. If you are an adult watching this movie you might even enjoy it, but do remember this is a kids movie. And so this movie was really good and I absolutely recommend it, as it has so many Easter eggs that just bring lots of nostalgia to fans of the old games.
